About the Project PhD Position: AI-based Image Analysis in Oncology Faculty of Informatics, Masaryk University (FI MU), Brno, Czech Republic Supervisor: Michal Kozubek Host centre: Centre for Biomedical Image Analysis (CBIA), FI MU Study programme: Ph.D. in Informatics Form: Full-time (preferred) Start: Spring 2027 Application deadline: November 30, 2026 Research Topic We invite applications for a PhD position at the intersection of artificial intelligence and biomedical image analysis, especially focusing on detection, segmentation, classification, and benchmarking tasks, with primary applications in oncology. The PhD project will be conducted within the Centre for Biomedical Image Analysis (CBIA( https://cbia.fi.muni.cz/ )) at the Faculty of Informatics, Masaryk University. CBIA provides a multidisciplinary research environment combining computer science, biomedical imaging, and clinical collaboration. The research will focus on the development of methods applicable to image data from hospitals (tumor analysis using MRI/CT/PET) as well as from biological laboratories (cancer cell studies using optical microscopy). There are many challenges to face: the data can be multidimensional (including temporal dimension) and multimodal but the resolution is limited; there are frequent imaging artifacts and class imbalance problems; cancer cells and tumors are often hard to find (or distinguish from imaging artefacts) and have fuzzy / uncertain boundaries or types/grades. Hence, it is necessary to develop methods able to cope with these issues as well as to introduce metrics and benchmarks for measuring their performance. Possible Research Directions Machine learning in cancer cell detection, segmentation, classification and behaviour analysis Machine learning in MRI brain tumor image analysis Dealing with uncertainty and fuzziness in biomedical image analysis Metrics and benchmarking in biomedical image analysis The exact topic will be specified jointly with the supervisor, depending on the candidate’s experience and interests. Programme & Study Environment The position is embedded in the four-year doctoral programme in Informatics at FI MU, delivered in English or Czech. Doctoral students are expected to: Conduct independent research under supervision Publish at international venues Participate in conferences and research stays

Funding & Employment Conditions Tuition fee: 0 CZK (also for English-language doctoral study) Standard funding package (full-time students): Basic doctoral scholarship: 18,000 CZK / month Employment contract (20% FTE): ~7,000 CZK net / month Publication-performance scholarship: up to 7,000 CZK / month Active PhD students typically reach ~32,000 CZK net monthly income during the standard study period.
