Applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates for a PhD scholarship at South East Technological University (SETU) for the project Men United: A football-based physical activity programme for men in Ireland following a prostate cancer diagnosis.
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among men in Ireland, and while survival rates are high, many men experience long-term physical and psychological side effects following treatment. Physical activity is a well-established supportive therapy that can improve fitness, reduce fatigue, and enhance quality of life. However, engagement remains low, particularly among men, highlighting the need for innovative, gender-sensitive approaches to survivorship care.
This PhD project will evaluate the translation, effectiveness, and scalability of the evidence-based FC Prostate (Football is Medicine) programme within the Irish context. Using a multi-phase, mixed-methods approach, the research will: (1) examine the feasibility, acceptability, and implementation of a community-based football intervention; (2) conduct a multi-site randomised controlled trial to assess its impact on physical and psychosocial health outcomes; and (3) evaluate its scalability and potential for national roll-out.
The successful candidate will gain experience in implementation science, clinical trial design, mixed-methods research, and stakeholder engagement across healthcare and community settings. The project includes collaboration with clinical partners, sporting organisations, and patient representatives, ensuring strong real-world impact.
This research has the potential to inform national cancer survivorship strategies by providing an evidence-based, scalable model to support men in improving their health, wellbeing, and quality of life following prostate cancer.

Qualifications
Essential
· A minimum of a 2.1 honours degree in a relevant discipline such as Exercise Science, Physiotherapy, Public Health, Health Psychology, or a related health or behavioural science field
Desirable
· A Master’s degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., Exercise Science, Public Health, Health Psychology or related field)
· An Exercise for Health Specialist qualification or equivalent professional accreditation
· Experience or interest in exercise prescription and/or delivery in clinical or community settings
· Knowledge of behaviour change theories and techniques relevant to physical activity
· Experience with group-based or sport-based physical activity interventions
Knowledge & Experience
Essential
· Knowledge of physical activity, exercise science, or health-related research in clinical or community settings
· Understanding of research methodologies (qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods) and ability to apply them appropriately
· Demonstrated experience in academic writing (e.g., undergraduate or postgraduate thesis, research reports, or assignments)
Desirable
· Knowledge of exercise oncology, cancer survivorship, or men’s health
· Experience in conducting research activities such as literature reviews, data collection, or data analysis
Skills & Competencies
Essential

· In order to be shortlisted for interview, you must meet the SETU English speaking requirements so please provide evidence in your application.
· Excellent academic writing skills, with the ability to produce clear, structured, and critical scientific work
· Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills
· Ability to critically analyse and synthesise scientific literature
· Strong organisational and time-management skills
· Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary research team
· Competence in data handling and analysis (e.g., SPSS, R, JASP, or similar)
· Ability to engage effectively with a range of stakeholders, including patients, healthcare professionals, and community organisations
· Awareness of ethical considerations in research involving human participants
Desirable
· Experience working with clinical, patient, or community populations
· Knowledge of behaviour change principles or interventions
