Project Overview
Apathy—characterized by a significant lack of motivation—is a common yet profoundly misunderstood symptom in individuals living with Motor Neuron Disease (MND). It severely impacts the quality of life for patients and exponentially increases carer burden. Despite its prevalence, healthcare professionals often lack the awareness and confidence to address apathy, frequently avoiding the topic altogether. This fully funded PhD project aims to bridge this critical gap in care.
The successful candidate will lead a vital mixed-methods study to improve support for people with MND and their families. By developing targeted resources, clinical recommendations, and communication frameworks, this project will foster greater understanding, acceptance, and management of apathy in MND care.
Proposed start date: 1st October 2026

Funding Notes
This studentship, funded by the MND Association, will cover home tuition fees and stipend for 3.5 years with funding available for training and development, conference attendance, and research costs.
