About the Project
A 3-year PhD Studentship in paediatric clinical neuroscience at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (GOS ICH)
Studentship title: International Neuropsychological Study of Children with New-onset refractory status epilepticus
A 3-year PhD Studentship in paediatric clinical neuroscience funded by Epilepsy Research Institute, is available within the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health starting 1st October 2026.
Background
The project is an International Neuropsychological Follow-up Study of Children with New-onset refractory status epilepticus (NORSE).
NORSE/FIRES is a severe neurological condition affecting previously typically developing, healthy individuals. Although much research focus has been on the acute phase of the disease, predicting neuropsychological outcomes in long-term survivors remains an unmet clinical need.
Hypothesis/Aims
We aim to establish if acute and chronic disease biomarkers, e.g. cytokine profile, clinical evolution, medication and immunomodulation received, structural brain MRI and EEG findings, may help predict long-term neuropsychological outcomes.
Outputs
We aim to identify acute and chronic clinical biomarkers and explore their predictive value for long-term clinical, cognitive and quality of life outcomes in this condition. We will support the development of tools for early risk stratification and intervention planning.
