Dr Chi Wu
Biographical details
Dr Chi Wu is an ARC DECRA fellow and Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Newcastle. He earned his PhD from the University of Sydney in 2022, where he subsequently served as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow from 2023 to 2024. His research focuses on computational mechanics, topology optimisation, machine learning, biomechanics, and advanced manufacturing, with a strong emphasis on developing novel machine learning-based approaches for design optimisation of advanced materials and structures. His research experience spans academia, industry, and clinical applications. In 2025, Dr Wu has secured two national competitive ARC grants totalling A$1.31M: (1) ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA 26): Nonlinear topology optimisation for stretchable mechanical structures, A$529,186, Sole Chief Investigator. Dr Chi Wu was awarded in a highly competitive round (13.1% success rate), which is the lowest rate in the past 14 years and one of only two recipients nationally in Mechanical Engineering (FoR 4017). (2)ARC Discover Projects (DP 26): Topology Optimisation for Active Mechanical Structures, A$778,360, one of two CIs, collaborated with Prof Qing Li at the University of Sydney.
Dr Wu as published over 50 papers in leading journals, including Nature Computational Science, Nature Communications, Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering, and Additive Manufacturing.
