Join us in tackling challenges in earth and environmental sciences using state-of-the-art modelling
Applications are open for a limited number of HOME students* for a fully funded 3.5-year PhD studentship in the field of exascale computing starting in September 2026.
All fees and stipends are funded at the standard UKRI rate( https://www.gla.ac.uk/research/ourresearchenvironment/prs/ukresearchandinnovationukri/feesstipendlevels/ ).
Application Deadline: 22nd May 2026 with interviews taking place in June (date TBC).
ExaGEO is a partnership between the University of Glasgow, the University of Edinburgh (EPCC), and Lancaster University (CEEDS). Together, we offer a unique interdisciplinary PhD training environment at the interface of Earth and environmental sciences, computational engineering, and data science.
Our mission is to harness the power of exascale computing to integrate complex earth system models and train the next generation of researchers to quantify present-day processes and explore future environmental scenarios.
ExaGEO tackles some of the most pressing modelling and data analysis challenges in earth and environmental sciences alongside computational research. Students will work under expert supervision in fields such as:
Atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, and ecosystem processes and evolution
Geodynamics, and environmental change
Geologic hazard analysis and prediction
Digital twinning
Sustainability solutions in engineering, environmental, and social sciences

Funding covers tuition fees for UK home applicants, as well as an annual stipend at the standard UKRI rate (£20,780 in 25/26 and rising in line with UKRI levels in subsequent years. *To be classed as a home applicant, candidates must meet the following criteria:
Be a UK national or UK/EU dual national or non-UK national with settled status / pre-settled status / indefinite leave to remain / indefinite leave to enter / discretionary leave / EU migrant worker in the UK or non-UK national with a claim for asylum or the family member of such a person, and
Have ordinary residence in the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man or British Overseas Territory, at the Point of Application, and
Have three years residency in the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, British Overseas Territory or EEA before the relevant date of application unless residency outside of the UK/ EEA has been of a temporary nature only and of a period less than six years.

Applicants must have, or expect to obtain, the equivalent of a 1st or 2:1 degree in a relevant subject, e.g., chemistry, computing science, earth/geo/environmental sciences, engineering, geography, mathematics etc.
