PhD直招介绍
About the Project The Leigh group are world leaders in the design and synthesis of catalyst-driven molecular machines. Recent examples from the group [e.g. Nature 637, 594 (2025); Nature 604, 80 (2022); Nature 594, 529 (2021)] demonstrate how the directionally biased dynamics of molecular components can be continuously and repetitively powered by catalysis, mirroring the operation of motor proteins and other cellular machinery. The Guo group have pioneered the use of single-molecule junctions (SMJs) to characterise the behaviour of molecules at the single-molecule level. They have recently achieved continuous breakthroughs [e.g. Science 352, 1443 (2016); Nat. Nanotechnol. 16, 1214 (2021); Nat. Chem. 15, 972 (2023); Nat. Nanotechnol. 20, 246 (2025); Chem 8, 243 (2022)] in the real-time observation of the dynamic behaviour of simple molecular machines and catalysts using single-molecule junctions. This work demonstrates how sub-molecular motion, reaction intermediates, and thermodynamic and kinetic parameters can be characterised at the single molecule level. This project aims to explore a catalysis-driven molecular motor that is equipped with anchoring groups for attachment to a single-molecule junction (Fig. 1). This will be designed and prepared using the Leigh group’s expertise at the University of Manchester. Subsequently, the motor will be attached to a molecular junction and its operation will be analysed using the Guo’s group expertise at Peking University. Observing the motor's operation within the single-molecule junction will enable the real-time visualisation of a molecular motor consuming fuel and releasing waste through catalysis, resulting in directional motion. The observation and characterisation of intermediates involved in the motor's operation will confirm the catalytic cycle of fuel-to-waste conversion, which is a feature of all catalysis-driven molecular machines, including biomolecular machinery. The results will mark a milestone in the field of molecular machines and single-molecule junction analysis, offering deep insights into catalysis-driven molecular motions. This understanding will expand the possibilities for artificial nanotechnology and enhance the understanding of molecular biomachinery. Equality, diversity and inclusion Equality, diversity and inclusion( https://www.manchester.ac.uk/connect/jobs/equality-diversity-inclusion/?utm_source=findaphd&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=fse-pgr-2022&utm_content=project_edi ) are fundamental to the success of The University of Manchester, and are at the heart of all of our activities. We know that diversity strengthens our research community, leading to enhanced research creativity, productivity and quality, and societal and economic impact. We actively encourage applicants from diverse career paths and backgrounds and from all sections of the community, regardless of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation and transgender status. We also support applications from those returning from a career break or other roles. We consider offering flexible study arrangements (including part-time: 50%, 60% or 80%, depending on the project/funder). FSE_Peking FSE_dualawards
曼彻斯特大学(英国) PhD Position in Real-Time Observation of the Dynamics of a Catalysis-Driven Molecular Motor Using a Single-Molecule Junction项目有没有奖学金,是不是全奖Phd招生,下面我们一起看一下【大学名称】Phd的奖学金资助情况
项目资助情况
Funding Notes Fees are waived at both Manchester and Peking. Students recruited by Manchester will receive an annual stipend at the minimum UKRI rate, which for the 2025/26 academic year is £20,780, while they are in Manchester for a maximum of two years. Additionally, Manchester students traveling to Peking will receive a flight allowance. All students based in Manchester will also receive an annual research training grant of up to £5,000 to support project running costs and consumables. Students recruited by Manchester will need to apply for the China Link Scholarship (CLS) funding to cover their stipend while based at Peking. The living standard provided by the CLS stipend is expected to be comparable to the UKRI stipend at Manchester. Lastly, successful CLS applicants will be guaranteed accommodation provided by Peking University.
