地理位置
UCSB is located in Goleta, a town of just over 50,000 residents, nestled in between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains. Some students live off-campus in downtown Santa Barbara or in Goleta itself but the majority of them reside in the neighboring town of Isla Vista, or I.V. I.V. is a one-mile by one-mile neighborhood that contains houses, apartments, and Greek chapter houses. There are also several restaurants, bars, grocery stores, coffee shops, and copy stores. Del Playa Street, or DP, contains several entryways to the beach. The houses that sit atop the cliffs on Del Playa have oceanside views. Downtown Santa Barbara is about a 15-minute drive from campus, down the 101 freeway. Students head there for shopping, dining, cultural events, and nightlife. State Street is the main downtown strip and has large department stores as well as boutiques, restaurants and some of the city’s most popular bars and lounges. At the end of State Street is the Santa Barbara pier, Stearns Wharf. It is a popular tourist destination but students enjoy the seafood restaurants, candy stores, souvenir shops, or just strolling down the boardwalk or the beach.

校园
UCSB sits atop 989 acres on the edge of the Pacific Ocean and the campus is surrounded by water on all sides. The Lagoon is a man-made reservoir, adjacent to the Pacific coastline, neighboring two on-campus dorms, San Rafael and San Miguel. UCSB is a lush campus with many different kinds of trees and flowers that provide contrast to the mostly concrete and granite buildings. In addition UCSB is a predominantly a biking campus and there are bike paths that weave all throughout. Storke Tower, named after one of the chief advocates of bringing UCSB to the UC system, Thomas Storke, is the largest building in Santa Barbara County. It overlooks Storke Plaza, the center of campus, where many concerts, rallies, speeches and fairs are held. UCen, the student university center, is another major gathering place on campus. The Ucen has a bookstore, a food court, conference rooms, couches, and computers.

宿舍条件
Living on-campus is required of UCSB first-years but even if it weren’t, you can bet most students would sign up for on-campus living anyway. Dorms are where most students meet their second-year, and often the rest of their college career, roommates. There are five dorms on campus named after the five Channel Islands that are directly across the ocean from campus. Each has a recreation room and a lounge. Anacapa and San Nic have computer labs and Santa Rosa has a small gym. The Interest floors in San Nicholas are the Quiet Study and Honors Floor. Anacapa, Santa Cruz, and Santa Rosa are all two stories, located on the edge of campus. The dorms are in a spider-like design, a main body with four outreaching legs. Each floor alternates between men and women. There are interest floors in each dorm, both on and off-campus; students with specific interests can participate in activities that reflect that interest. The interest floors in Anacapa are the Honors and Men’s floors, which are geared toward Honors students and outdoors enthusiasts, respectively. The other two on-campus dorms are San Nicholas and San Miguel. They are taller, at eight stories each, and older-looking. Each floor has a wing for men and women. San Nicholas also has an Honors floor as well as a Quiet Study floor. There are two other on-campus dorms, Manzanita and San Rafael. These dorms house some freshmen, international, and second-year students. The Manzanita dorms are separated into clusters with a central recreation and information building. San Raf dorms are divided into several buildings. There is an eight-story building, which is the main residential area. There are also several, smaller buildings that are clustered together near the main one. They’re all part of the San Rafael community. The freshman orientations are held at the Manzanita dorms. Because these dorms are located at the far edge of campus, near Isla Vista, they have their own Dining Hall. They also have a swimming pool and sand volleyball courts. The Manzanita and San Rafael dorms are designed for students who wish to be independent, but still connected to campus and a helpful network of other students. Approximately three-fourths of a mile from campus is the Santa Catalina dorm. It is the largest freshman residence hall. Formerly known as Francisco Torres, or F.T., Santa Catalina residents are divided into two towers, North and South. They are both 10 stories high and share a dining hall, tennis courts, expansive but cramped bike racks, and pool. Rooms are suite-style double rooms, with four students sharing one bathroom. Floors are co-ed, with boys in one wing and girls in the other. Students get to class by walking, riding their bike, driving and parking on-campus or in I.V., or by taking the free MTD bus.

体育培养
UCSB is a Division I school and member of the Big West Conference. Their mascot is the Gaucho and their colors are blue and gold. The university’s most popular program is Men’s Soccer. In the 2006-2007 season the team won the NCAA National Championship, which earned them a visit to the White House. They have won the Big West Championship five of the last seven years. Women’s Basketball has also been historically successful. In 2004 they made it to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen tournament where they were defeated by UConn. In 2005 the team won its ninth straight Big West Championship. Club sports are extremely popular at UCSB, namely lacrosse, rugby, and ultimate frisbee. Students also like enjoying the weather by participating in intramural sports, such as softball, soccer, tennis, and hockey. The Gaucho Locos are the student cheering organization that is entirely student-run and organized. Each year the Locos make a “Top Ten Reasons You Know you’re a Gaucho.” They are known for being rambunctious and ever-loyal, much to the detriment of the opposing team. Popularly attended games are Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Lacrosse, and Men’s Soccer.
