Irvine is a city of around 200,000 in Southern California’s Orange County. UCI is in the heart of Orange County, California (of The O.C. fame) and there are many activities available and beautiful places to visit. However, since Southern California has a strong car culture, having a car or some form of transportation is necessary to get around. Still, if you do not have a car, public transportation is free to all UCI students as long as they have a student ID card. There are a bunch of shopping centers nearby that offer many different options in the way of stores, restaurants, and other entertainment. The university’s campus is connected to a small plaza called the University Center, which has many eateries and cafés in addition to a fitness center and clothing store. A place that is very popular there is Cha, which serves delicious bubble tea and food. There’s also a little French café called Le Diplomat that serves tasty French and Vietnamese Sandwiches. The Golden Spoon, a frozen yogurt place is perfect for hot days, and Peet’s Coffee and Tea is very good as well. The University Center also offers a nail salon, hair salon, dry cleaning, a tanning booth, and a children’s bookstore. There’s also a movie theater that shows independent films. A new shopping area called “The District” just opened about ten minutes away from campus. This outdoor mall has a theater and countless new restaurants to try. There is also a Target, Wholesome Foods, and several other large chain stores. This mall has a laid-back feel to it and is perfect for people who love the beach or simply hanging out with friends. Another shopping area in the vicinity is South Coast Plaza, geared toward more upscale brands, though there are also plenty of stores that offer items at affordable prices. Stores include Nordstrom, Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Burberry, Gucci, Chanel, H & M, and Victoria’s Secret. There are also many restaurants at South Coast, such as The Rainforest Café and Lawry’s. Newport Beach, which is adjacent to Irvine, is a fun place to hang out because it has a huge beach and pier where there is always something going on. Newport Beach definitely gives off the feel of city life, especially compared to Irvine, because there are many activities to enjoy as a young adult. There is a huge bar scene for those over 21, but there are also many college house parties as well. Newport Beach is also a popular destination for off-campus housing because it can be a lot cheaper than living in Irvine. Finally, for further destinations, students also enjoy Laguna Beach and Huntington Beach. These are both beach cities, but Laguna is more exclusive than Huntington Beach. Huntington Beach definitely gives off more of a city vibe and has more diversity. The pier at Huntington Beach usually has a lot of people hanging around at night so there is an exciting atmosphere that cannot be experienced in Irvine.

UC-Irvine’s main campus was designed in a circle, with a park in the center named after the school’s first chancellor, Aldrich. The park is thick with trees and gives students plenty of space to study outside and enjoy the greenery. The outer walkway of the park known as Ring Road is about one mile long and the undergraduate schools, libraries, and student center are found along the road, each with its own plaza area. Several of the plazas offer places to have lunch. The major housing communities for freshmen, Mesa Court and Middle Earth, can also be found a little way off from Ring Road. A relatively young school, UCI is constantly expanding infrastructure, leading to the nickname, “Under Construction Indefinitely,” and continued growth is anticipated for the foreseeable future. As part of the school’s growth, UCI recently remodeled its student center. The center debuted in the fall of 2007, with two food courts, a permanent performance area, and more meeting and study space than ever before. Just east of campus is the Anteater Recreation Center (ARC), an 89,000-square-foot indoor facility that features a rock-climbing wall, workout rooms, and group fitness classes. The complex also features a 25-acre outdoor area. South of the ARC is Arroyo Vista, which offers themed housing as well as housing for Greek students.

Students at UCI are guaranteed the first two years of housing. Freshmen primarily live in either of two housing complexes: Mesa Court or Middle Earth. During their second year, students can move to one of four other housing communities on campus: Arroyo Vista, Campus Village, Vista Del Campo, or Vista Del Campo Norte. The dorms at UCI play an integral role part in making your college experience the best it can be. You will meet a lot of new people, not just from your dorm, but from surrounding dorms as well. Also, living in the dorms will put you in contact with diverse groups of students that you can get to know and hang out with. I met my best friend as a freshman when we shared a suite. The housing community that I lived in my freshman year was Middle Earth. The names of the halls and facilities in this complex are named after J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogy - examples include Balin, Hobbiton, and Misty Mountain. Middle Earth houses about 1,550 students in 24 houses. Each dorm contains mostly double rooms, which are shared by two students, but there are also singles and triples available. Students looking to live with people of similar interests can apply to special interest halls, such as study abroad or civic involvement. Middle Earth has two dining halls, Pippin and Brandywine Commons. Also, there is a small gym, basketball and volleyball courts, and a gaming center. Middle Earth is known for housing the more studious people. The first residential community at UCI, Mesa Court is the other freshman dorm complex on campus. Many of the buildings are comprised of only two floors sectioned off into suite-style areas with a centralized bathroom, but a few newer dorms have additional levels and house more students. Like Middle Earth, Mesa Court also has themed halls for students who share common interests. Some of the themes of the dorms include music, wellness, and fine arts. Students from Mesa Court tend to be more socially focused than their Middle Earth counterparts. One hall in Mesa Court, Sierra, offers a program that fosters a particularly close-knit community environment. Every suite in Sierra has a programmer that acts a mini-Resident Advisor. The programmer plans events for their suites and has exchanges with a ‘brother’ or ‘sister’ suite of all males or all females. In terms of sports facilities, Mesa Court has basketball and volleyball courts available for students’ use. Mesa Commons provides all-you-can-eat dining for students at breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

UC-Irvine competes in Division I of the NCAA and in the Big West Conference. The school has competitive teams in sports such as baseball, waterpolo, soccer, swimming, volleyball, and cross country. UCI sponsors 23 intercollegiate athletic teams: 11 men’s teams, 11 women’s teams, and one coed sailing program. Since 1969, UCI has won 25 national team championships in nine different sports and has had 63 individual national champions. The most recent national title came from the men’s volleyball team, which won the NCAA Division I title in 2007. UCI’s baseball team has also garnered recognition for recently participating in the College World Series. Students who are not part of intercollegiate athletics but still wish to compete will join club teams and intramural teams. The Anteater Recreation Center hosts all the intramural sports and the program is very popular for students with a variety of interests. Levels of competition also vary depending on the leagues, which range from Greek to graduate students.
