地理位置
Davis, California, is one of the last real college towns in America. Almost half of its population of about 64,000 is composed of students towards whom virtually all aspects of the city, from housing to restaurants to retailers, are geared. Downtown Davis is within walking distance of the center of campus. UC Davis is located in California’s Central Valley, the heart of West Coast wine country. The area is mostly flat, which makes it ideal for bike riding. Davis is recognized as the bike capital of the country and recently held the Guinness World Record for largest bicycle parade. Those students who do have cars, however, can enjoy Sacramento, only 15 miles away, and San Francisco, 70 miles away.

校园
At 5,500 acres, UC Davis is the largest campus in the UC system and offers a lot of great places to hang out before or after class (or even during class, which on sunny spring days can be hard to resist). The number one place to hang out is the Quad, which was once the school’s alfalfa field: now it is usually packed with students tossing footballs or Frisbees, lounging on the grass, eating lunch, singing, dancing, climbing trees, or enjoying free concerts. It is also the site of the Epic Quad Battle, a last-day-of-Spring-classes tradition in which anyone is invited to grab one of those foam pool noodles, shield themselves in cardboard, join one of two teams, and attack fellow students. On the north end of the Quad sits the Memorial Union to which, in the winter, the Quad relinquishes its title as most popular hangout. It contains a US Post Office, stationery store, student store, the campus bookstore, student-run travel agency, student-run note-taking service, two floors’ worth of meeting and conference rooms, and the Coffee House, or CoHo, the largest student-run restaurant in the country . It opened in 1967 and has been one of the most popular places on campus ever since. It is also frequently ranked in the top three most popular places to work in Davis, with a Tex Mex grill, pasta bar, salads, pizza, corndogs, breadsticks, breakfast bagels, a bakery, and packaged snacks, as well as your standard coffee shop fare. It hosts music, comedy, and other shows in its larger dining area. Directly across the corridor from the CoHo is the more sedate Griffin Lounge, mainly used for studying or sleeping. It has comfortable couches and chairs, soft music, and a fireplace. During the evening, it also hosts comedy or slam poetry events. And underneath the MU is the more raucous Games Area which contains an arcade, billiard room, and bowling alley. The Silo was built around 1908 as a dairy barn. It now houses a Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Carl’s Jr., and unique campus restaurants like La Crêpe and Café Fresca. The Silo has its own pub which serves beer on tap, and it also serves as a major bus terminal for the student-run transportation system, Unitrans. Shields Library, also along the Quad, is one of the largest buildings on campus and the third largest library in the UC system. Students can be found there 24 hours a day, studying or napping—Shields was voted “Best Place to Sleep” in the campus newspaper’s annual “Best of Davis” issue. The UC Davis Arboretum is a 100 acre public garden which is home to 4,000 kinds of plants and trees. It features a man-made lake and native Northern Californian trees and plant-life. There's even a small stand of world-famous redwood trees. It is always open and free to anyone who wants to walk the 3.5 mile path along Putah Creek, which was the inspiration for the Creedence Clearwater Revival song “Green River.” The Arboretum is frequently voted “Best Place to Take a Date.

Residence Halls at Davis are split up into three different areas: Segundo, Tercero, and Quarto, each of which consists of a cluster of residence buildings all grouped around a common plaza, courtyard, or lawn area. (The privately-owned apartments located on campus are called Primero Grove, but these are not considered residence halls.) Segundo and Tercero buildings offer traditional-style dorms, a long hallway with double-occupancy rooms and a common bathroom near the end of the hall. Quarto offers apartment-like suites which have two double-occupancy sleeping quarters on each side of a common living room and bathroom. The only downside to suites is that students have to clean their own bathrooms, whereas traditional dorm floors have a weekly cleaning service. All of the residence halls feature several lounges, study areas, academic advising centers, and computer labs, and all are surrounded by open, grassy areas and shade trees. The Residence Halls are located to offer convenient access to classes, dining halls, and other campus resources. The fourteen buildings that make up Segundo and house 1,600 freshmen are on the Northwest corner of the campus close to the Activities and Recreation Center (ARC), which is the main gym. It is also close to the soccer fields and the Pavilion where the basketball teams play their home games. Segundo is across the street from shopping plazas and restaurants, including the popular bar the Davis Graduate. The seventeen modern buildings that make up Tercero and house 1,500 freshmen are in the southwest corner, closest to the center of campus, just a short walk from the Quad and Memorial Union. The five buildings that make up Cuarto and house 1,450 freshmen are located off of the main campus, one block northwest of the Segundo area. The buildings that make up the Cuarto are clustered around private outdoor courtyards, three of which have swimming pools and spas. Any student living in any of the residence halls on campus is free to use their amenities.

体育培养
Since August 2007, Davis has been Division I in the Big West Conference and Division I FCS for football. It has one of the largest athletics programs in the nation with 26 varsity sports, 30 club sports, and 36 intramural teams. About 800 students play on the varsity teams alone. The transition to Division I took four years, during which athletes were allowed to play but not compete in post-season events or championships. Teams have been rewarded for their patience with a new 9,000-seat multi-use stadium, a new aquatics center, and expanded facilities. In football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, wrestling, and baseball, Davis has already racked up wins against rival Stanford, and one wrestler, Derek Moore, just became the first Aggie to win a Division I championship.
