Norman is a wonderful college town that basically oozes crimson and cream pride. The locals are friendly and welcoming to the college students and chances are most of them either work for the university or thrive off of the traffic it attracts. Campus Corner is the hotspot for college kids, with quirky shops, great bars, and the best restaurants in town. It is located just north of the North Oval, so for those who choose to live on campus, this lively scene is within walking distance. For anyone who gets bored with Norman, the state hub, Oklahoma City, is a 30-minute drive from campus and can offer another helping of entertainment. If you do find yourself in OKC, check out downtown’s Bricktown for great nightlife, nosh, and shopping. In Norman, everything’s close. College kids pack all the funky old houses in neighborhoods surrounding campus. If you squint on a sunny day, it’s almost like being in a small Colorado town—minus mountains, plus crows. You can bike anywhere: the grocery store, a buddy’s house party off of Boyd Street, Campus Corner, Walgreens, Starbucks...oh, and classes.

OU’s lush campus is organized into two main sections: the North Oval (also called the Parrington Oval) and South Oval (Van Vleet Oval), with Bizell Library and Evans Hall stationed between the two. Most of the campus’ Cherokee Gothic buildings surround the oval driveways, making it easy to get around campus or have your friends drop you off at class if you’re feeling lazy. Campus is big and students sometimes trek 20 minutes or more to get from the dorms to the outlying buildings, but for the most part you can get where you’re going in under ten minutes. Cate Center doubles as a popular hangout for freshmen and upperclassmen alike, offering movie rentals, pool tables, ping pong, TVs, and spacious lounging areas for students to chat and study. The Union hosts free events every weekend featuring newly-released movies, awesome concerts by bands you know, and special banquets with guest speakers from across the globe. The Union Programming Board is run by students and keeps the Union poppin’. Since we all grew up on farms, OU provides a healthy dose of nature nostalgia, with benches everywhere, beautiful gardens, fountains, and even a swing set. You’ll find people lounging everywhere from under trees to up in the branches, rain, shine, night or day. (Just kidding about the farm thing.) The Bookmark, a coffee shop in the library, is a haven for coffee drinkers who need a break from books. It’s a great place to meet with friends for study groups. Whether they’re taking a Pilates class or pumping iron, hundreds of students pile into the Huston Huffman Center, a.k.a. “The Huff,” every day. You can do anything in this arena-sized playground: badminton, basketball, tae-kwon-do , racquetball, and many group fitness classes are offered for a small fee.

The University of Oklahoma residence halls provide your run-of-the-mill dorm experience: not too glamorous and not too rancid. Freshmen are required to live on campus and will most likely live in the towers nearest the cafeteria. Upperclassmen get first pick of the choicest residences and many opt for the new campus apartments if they don’t move off campus or into Greek houses. The majority of OU freshmen live in “the towers.” In a one- or two-person room, kids decorate their space and share a bathroom with suitemates. The towers are happening: people are out and about 24/7. Each tower has something to offer, such as a Burger King, a convenience store, and other quick bites and handy stops for students on the go. The Honors College dorms are smaller, containing fewer rooms and maintaining a calmer atmosphere. Many upperclassmen live in OU’s Traditions Apartments. Located a quick and free bus ride from campus, these new pads are packed with students and afford a little more independence. They also come complete with workout rooms, pool, hot tub, and bills included in monthly dues.

The OU Sooners are NCAA Division I and are a member of the Big 12 Conference. Sports are huge at this Southern state school: Sooner football is not just a sport, it’s a way of life for five months of the year. Fans from all over the state clog the city and join students in cheering on the legendary Sooners, winners of seven National Championships. Norman seems to shut down entirely on football game days, and tailgates surround the perimeter of the stadium. Basketball is another popular sport at OU, though it doesn’t draw the same crowds. The gymnastics program is extremely successful; in fact the men’s team won the 2008 NCAA Championship.
