The individual and social benefits of sport and physical activity are well-known. Sport favors physical and mental well-being, health, teamwork, and openness towards others. Aix-Marseille University’s ambitious sports policy aims to encourage and facilitate the personal fulfilment and social development of all AMU students, faculty, and staff through involvement in university sport. This far-reaching endeavor will participate in the creation of our new university’s identity and strengthen its cohesion. The sports policy, implemented through Mission Sport in collaboration with the various stakeholders of university sport, has three major components: developing sport for all strengthening competitive sport organizing sports events The development of sport for all concerns recreational (leisure) and educational sporting activities (included in the curriculum). The idea is to facilitate participation for as many people as possible by tailoring the range of activities on offer to people’s needs. This includes taking into account the specificities of certain populations (people with disabilities, for example) to ensure that a range of adapted sporting activities is available. Efforts to strengthen competitive sport all the way to the highest levels reflect AMU’s intention to build a strong national and international reputation. The university also wants to help its top athletes succeed on both fronts – in sport and academically – through an athlete support scheme. Finally, by promoting the organization of sports events at various levels, AMU hopes to raise its profile, strengthen its internal cohesion, and contribute to a vibrant campus life.
