Montréal, Canada's second largest city, is in the province of Quebec. The official language is French. There are two main campuses, Downtown and MacDonald (for agriculture, environmental sciences, dietetics and nutrition), 25 miles west of the central Montréal campus. Montréal is served by two international airports – Pierre Elliott Trudeau International and Mirabel International. Flat-fare taxis and buses to central Montréal are available from both. The city is well-served by long-distance coaches and buses. Montréal is on two train lines – the Canadia network ViaRail, and Amtrak's line (which runs daily services to and from New York). A free central Montréal–MacDonald campus shuttle service runs regularly and there is also public transport between the two. Montréal benefits from an efficient public transport system of buses and subway. Students under the age of 25 qualify for a reduced fare pass (if they have a Montréal address).

University housing ranges in cost according to type and the modern residences cost more. The cheapest on-campus undergraduate option is £4,601 and the most expensive is £7,630 (CA$7,190 to $11,917). For graduates, a single room with shared facilities is £3,730 a year and a single apartment up to £7,630 ($5,827 to $10,517).

McGill is represented in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) by the McGill Redmen (men's) and the McGill Martlets(women's). Following a major restructuring of the varsity programme for the fall semester of 2010, McGill is currently home to 28 varsity teams. McGill's unique mascot, Marty the Martlet, was introduced during the 2005 Homecoming game, The downtown McGill campus sport and exercise facilities include: the McGill Sports Centre (which includes the Tomlinson Fieldhouse and the Windsor Varsity Clinic), Molson Stadium, Memorial Pool, Tomlinson Hall, McConnell Arena, Forbes Field, many outdoor tennis courts and other extra-curricular arenas and faculties. The Macdonald Campus facilities, include an arena, a gymnasium, a pool, tennis courts, fitness centres and hundreds of acres of green space for regular use. The university's largest sporting venue, Molson Stadium, was constructed in 1914. Following an expansion project completed in 2010, it now seats just over 25,000, and is the current home field of the Montreal Alouettes.
