The university is located in the city of Leuven in the region of Flanders, the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium. Leuven is a modern, bustling and safe student city with a long and rich history. Cultural and recreational opportunities abound. Brussels, the Belgian and European capital, is only a 20-minute train ride away. Other major European capitals such as Amsterdam, Paris and London are easily accessible by train (ca. 2 hours). Brussels International Airport is the closest international airport. Trains to Leuven run twice an hour (ca. 15 minutes en route to Leuven). You can also fly to Brussels South Charleroi Airport (ca. 2 hours en route to Leuven using public transportation). Belgium has an excellent public transport network; trains and buses connect Leuven with almost every other Belgian city. Students can make use of the public transport buses in and around Leuven for €20 (c. £17) per academic year.

Leuven offers a wide range of housing options at reasonable prices. The vast majority of students choose to rent a room in a privately-owned student house with shared common spaces and facilities. The average rent is approximately €350 (£290) per month for a single room, including expenses for heating, electricity and water (utilities). The University Housing Office offers assistance regarding housing and also maintains an online database of private accommodation which can be consulted before arriving. There are also KU Leuven Student Services residence halls (allocations only possible through the Housing Service) and KU Leuven Central Services residence halls (applications to be made online before arrival). Prices range from €100–€150 (£84-£127) per month for a single room. Only international students holding specific scholarships are eligible for rooms in subsidised university residences.

With the Sports Card & Fitness Card, students can make use of an extensive range of sport facilities and organised sports activities in 60 different sports.
