Auburn University is located in Auburn, Alabama, which has a movie theater, shopping mall, and bowling alley, along with exciting downtown nightlife. Dubbed the “Loveliest Village on the Plains” (a reference to an Oliver Goldsmith poem), Auburn is a homey town whose residents are involved in university life and are committed football fans. Indeed, many Auburn University traditions involve the local community. After football wins and other sports victories, students and townspeople cover trees at Toomer’s Corner—the intersection of College Street and Magnolia Avenue—with toilet paper in what’s known as “Rolling Toomer’s.” On game days, students head to Momma Goldberg’s restaurant, affectionately called Momma G’s,for nachos, sandwiches, and beer. And before the Tigers play the University of Alabama’s Crimson Tide, fans summon War Eagle spirit at the Beat Bama Parade. If Auburn becomes too familiar, students venture to the nearby cities of Columbus, Opelika and Montgomery, in Alabama, and Atlanta, Georgia. Tiger Town, a large shopping center in Opelika, has a Target, Old Navy, Dick’s Sporting Goods and restaurants like Buffalo Wild Wings and Olive Garden. Columbus is home to Fort Benning and Peachtree Mall—and more shopping. Montgomery, only 45 minutes away and Alabama’s state capitol, is the largest of Auburn’s surrounding areas. Montgomery offers shopping, dining and entertainment options, like the Montgomery Biscuits’ minor league baseball games. A newly-built outdoor shopping center, East Chase, has popular stores—like Abercrombie, Victoria’s Secret, Hollister, Dillard’s and Banana Republic—and restaurants like Red Robin, Panera Bread and Starbucks.

Auburn’s campus stretches over 1,843 acres and includes 89 academic buildings. Its architecture ranges from plantation-style to retro brick. The western third of the campus is devoted to athletics, with several fields, a soccer complex, a track, and an aquatics center. The eastern portion houses the dorms and academic buildings in alternating sections. Foy Student Union, a popular student hangout, isn’t centrally located—it’s near the northeastern border of campus—as is the library, which is on Auburn’s eastern edge. But both buildings are near many dorms, so they’re not far for a portion of students.

At its inception, Auburn University was called East Alabama Male College. Though Auburn’s mascot is a tiger named Aubie, its fight song is “War Eagle.” Confusing. Auburn’s award-winning marching band marched in the United States Presidential Inaugural Parade for President George W. Bush in 2005. The Wreck Tech Pajama Parade (unsurprisingly, a parade through Auburn where students wear pajamas) originated back in 1896. Auburn cadets left their dorms the night before the Auburn-Georgia Tech football game and greased the railroad tracks, so Georgia Tech’s train slid all the way to Loachapoka, Auburn’s neighboring town. General Richard B. Myers spoke at Auburn’s 2008 commencement.

Auburn University is known for football, and both students and community members passionately support the Auburn Tigers (many students cite football as their favorite aspect of life at Auburn). The Auburn Tigers is a DI team and competes in the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Tommy Tuberville has coached the team for almost 10 years, since 1999. The Tigers’ laundry list of successes includes 77 winning seasons, 34 bowl appearances, 11 undefeated seasons, 10 conference championships, six SEC Conference Championships, and six Western Division championships. (Whew!) Auburn’s program ranks 14th in the College Football Research Center’s list of the best college football programs in history. The football team’s success is a huge morale-booster on campus and the root of many Auburn traditions. These include “Rolling Toomer’s” (covering Toomer’s Corner with toilet paper), the Beat Bama Parade (before the Auburn-Alabama game), and Tiger Walk (a procession of the football team and fans). Auburn’s baseball and basketball teams aren’t shabby, either. The baseball team has competed in four College World Series and won four SEC titles and three SEC Tournament Championships. The women’s basketball team secured four SEC Tournament titles and three SEC regular season titles, competed in 15 NCAA tournaments, and made it to three Final Fours. The men’s basketball team won one SEC Tournament Championship, won two regular-season SEC titles, competed in six NCAA Tournaments and advanced to the Elite Eight once.
