Since financial awards for doctoral study are based on academic merit rather than need, applicants for admission should request funding in all but extraordinary cases. All first-year students who do not have external financial awards (federal, state, or private) normally receive University Fellowships and Graduate Assistantships consisting of a full tuition payment and an additional stipend to cover living expenses. The department guarantees support for the first five years of study, including four years of summer support.

The Graduate School has established English language requirements for foreign applicants. In 2011 the minimum TOEFL score for most foreign students was 90 for the internet-based test, 233 for the computer-based test, and 577 for the paper-based test.

We do not require the GRE for Admission. Although Northwestern's Graduate School permits you to submit GRE scores along with your application, you are not required to submit your scores, and our admissions process does not take your GRE scores into account. Since there is no reason for you to submit your GRE scores, our advice would be not to submit them.
