Our students come from a range of disciplines. A strong background in advanced multivariate calculus and linear algebra is most important, and prior exposure to mathematical analysis at the level of the Duke course MATH 531 Basic Analysis is beneficial. Prior research experience is always a factor in admission decisions. Prior use of computing in statistical/scientific problems is valuable since there is a major emphasis on statistical computation in modern statistical research.
