JOB PROFILE/TYPE: PhD Candidate RESEARCH FIELD(S): Machine Learning, Statistical Learning, Bioinformatics JOB LOCATION: Marseille, France. Working environment The Cancer Research Center of Marseille (CRCM) is the basic science and translational research unit of the IPC ( http://www.institutpaolicalmettes.fr/en/research/ ). Also affiliated to INSERM, CNRS and Aix-Marseille University, the 400 researchers working at the CRCM form a strongly multi-disciplinary research environment characterized by frequent and close collaborations with IPC clinicians. IPC is a member of the UNICANCER network ( http://www.unicancer.fr/en/unicancer ). More information about the host group: https://www.crcm-marseille.fr/en/teams/research-teams/pedro-ballester/ . Project This project will investigate the application of Artificial Intelligence, and especially its Machine Learning (ML) component, to Precision Oncology (PO). PO is a form of medicine that uses personal information to prevent, diagnose and treat cancers. Here we focus on the PO topic of how to predict which cancer patients will respond to a given drug treatment from the molecular profiles of their tumours. Importantly most PO-based strategies have been developed for a targeted therapy, i.e. a drug rationally designed to disrupt specific survival and/or proliferation pathways in tumour cells. Yet, conventional cytotoxic agents, which remain a major cornerstone of treatment for a large number of advanced cancers, are most frequently prescribed empirically without molecular selection. Similarly, robust molecular predictors of immunotherapy, an emerging therapeutic approach which has already revolutionised the management and prognosis of an increasing number of malignancies, are still warranted. We will thus investigate how to best leverage tumour molecular profiles to predict response to cytotoxic agents in addition to targeted therapies (including immunotherapies). The project will be carried out using new existing and forthcoming patient data from clinical trials.

What we offer The successful candidate will register as a PhD student and receive a gross monthly salary of about €1760 for three years to cover accommodation, subsistence and registration fees (ca. €400 per year). This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and diligent scientist to carry out a PhD project on a timely data science problem of great therapeutic importance. The results of this project will be applied to clinical research case studies in collaboration with IPC oncologists. The student will join the Ballester team at the CRCM. S/he will have the opportunity to improve current skills further and also acquire new skills in the analysis of molecular tumour profiles and clinical pharmacogenomics modelling. All the PhD students in this team have projects in related areas and develop/use somewhat similar methods, so the student will have plenty of in situ help to get started. In terms of quality of life, the CRCM is located in Marseille and thus the student will enjoy living in an exciting multi-cultural city at the French Mediterranean coast.

Selection criteria - Essential · An excellent first or master degree with a major focus on computational analysis of experimental data, preferably in an area directly relevant to the project. · Skilled in the implementation of R or Python scripts for scientific data analysis. · Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing. Selection criteria - Desirable · Well-versed in supervised learning from high-dimensional data. · Prior use of computational tools and resources to analyse clinical pharmaco-omic data. · Experience in writing research for publication in international journals. · Master project and/or internship in the application of machine learning to solve real-world problems in the context of biomedical research. · Knowledge about handling, integrating, processing and analysing molecular profiling data (e.g. DNA-seq, RNA-seq, miRNA-seq and/or DNA methylation microarrays). · Comfortable working in linux platforms. · Knowledge of the French language.
