PhD Studentships in Foundational AI Research
As part of the recently announced UKRI Science of Fundamental AI Research Lab( https://www.ukri.org/news/ukri-launches-two-ai-research-labs-to-stay-ahead-in-global-race/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ) (SOFAIR), UCL will be offering PhD studentships at the cutting edge of foundational AI research. The SOFAIR Lab brings together researchers from across computer science, mathematics, statistics, and neuroscience to explore new models and approaches. SOFAIR PhD students will undertake projects aimed to develop new foundation model paradigms and then test them at scale. Modern AI relies heavily on a small number of popular architectures trained on vast data, requiring massive compute infrastructure. Despite recent advances, AI systems still lack capabilities in key areas: robust reasoning, uncertainty awareness, causal understanding, ‘what if’ planning, explainable decisions, continual learning and efficient domain knowledge incorporation. We believe addressing these shortcomings will require rethinking models, architectures, and distributed training schemes. The lab is developing an open-source multimodal frontier foundation model, which can act as an in-house testbed for experimentation.
This PhD opportunity differs from many other AI PhD positions in its focus on fundamental advances in methodology, not on developing applications that build upon existing foundation models. This is not a PhD in “AI for X” — it is a PhD in developing the next generation of underlying models.
Program structure and location
These PhD positions will be based at the UCL AI Centre in central London, one of the largest academic research and training centres in AI in Europe. PhD candidates will be closely embedded with SOFAIR faculty and postdoctoral researchers, with the opportunity to participate in department seminars, workshops, reading groups, and industry events.
The SOFAIR Lab( https://www.ucl.ac.uk/engineering/sofair-lab ) includes researchers based at other universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, and Edinburgh. PhD students will have the opportunity to engage in an extended research visit to one of these partner institutions.
Students will spend their first year engaged in rotations across Lab research projects, giving the opportunity to work broadly across many aspects of foundational AI research. Each faculty-led project will include the PhD student as a core contributor. The overall thesis topic and supervisory team will be developed during this rotation year, based on the student’s interest and experience.

What we are looking for
We are looking for creative thinkers who would like to make true methodological advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence, not just tinker at the margins or pursue applications based on existing models. Typical academic preparation would be an MSc or MEng in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Neuroscience or a related field, or related equivalent experience (e.g. through industry).
