The Department of Heritage Studies of the Faculty of Design Sciences is looking for a full-time (100%) PhD scholarship holder in the framework of the BOF project: Rooting for the roots of the nation? Archaeological museums, historical awareness and identities in Belgium (ca. 1860-1940)
Function
You will actively work on the preparation and defence of a doctoral dissertation in heritage studies and history under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Gerrit Verhoeven, Prof. Dr. Ulrike Müller and Prof. Dr. Ilja Van Damme.
In this PhD, you will examine the historical development of three archaeological collections in Belgian museums – Brussels, Namur and Antwerp. Which objects were collected exactly? Who took the lead in building the collection? And how were those collections presented and contextualized? In doing so, you examine the extent to which archaeological collections were used to strengthen national, regional or local identities and how they reflected shifts in the nineteenth- and twentieth-century museum world (scientificisation, democratisation, educational functions). You will publish scientific articles related to the research project and work towards a monograph on the topic. In addition, you will present your research results at research seminars, international conferences and workshops.
You will take on a limited package of teaching and research support tasks within the heritage studies and/or history programme.

Offer
We offer a PhD scholarship for a period of 2 years. The scholarship is renewable after positive evaluation, with a term of 2 years.
The planned start date is 1 October 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Your monthly grant will be calculated according to the scholarship amounts( https://www.uantwerpen.be/nl/jobs/wat-bieden-wij/ ) for doctoral scholarship holders.
You will receive eco vouchers, internet connectivity allowance, and a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of your commute by public transport.
As a doctoral researcher, you will have access to a wide and varied range of training courses and training credits through the Antwerp Doctoral School( https://www.uantwerpen.be/nl/centra/antwerp-doctoral-school/doctoraatsopleiding/ ).
You will work largely on campus Mutsaard, in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.

Profile
You have a master's degree in heritage studies, (art) history, archaeology or other relevant fields or you obtain the diploma at the latest at the time of appointment.
You can present excellent study results (top 10% of your study group).
Candidates must meet the criteria for applying for an FWO PhD fellowship.
Your teaching competencies are in line with the University of Antwerp's educational vision( https://www.uantwerpen.be/nl/overuantwerpen/organisatie/waar-staan-we-voor/missie-en-visie/kerntaken/onderwijs/ ).
Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policy( https://www.uantwerpen.be/nl/onderzoek/beleid/ ).
You work in a quality-oriented, honest, creative and collaborative way.
In terms of content, knowledge of the nineteenth- and twentieth-century history of museums, archaeology and nationalism is an advantage. In addition to an excellent knowledge of Dutch and English, a good passive knowledge of French is indispensable for reading the sources. A good command of palaeography is also an advantage there.
