About the Project Postdoctoral Researcher & PhD Student Openings — Battery Sensor Technology & AI Department of Applied Physical Sciences, UNC Chapel Hill We are seeking motivated candidates for one Postdoctoral Research Associate and one or more PhD students to join our group. Both positions are available immediately and will remain open until filled. Please visit the department website for more information: https://aps.unc.edu/ Research Focus Our group in the Department of Applied Physical Sciences (APS) at UNC Chapel Hill conducts interdisciplinary materials science research with an emphasis on advanced energy storage systems. We are expanding a well-funded research program on battery sensor technology and AI-driven battery diagnostics, combining in-situ/operando sensing (e.g., optical fiber sensors, acoustic sensors, and other embedded sensing modalities) with machine learning to build predictive models for battery state estimation, degradation, and failure detection. The project offers opportunities to collaborate with national laboratories, industry partners, and international collaborators. Possible Research Directions Design and integration of optical fiber or other embedded sensors into battery cells and packs In-situ/operando characterization of electrochemical and mechanical phenomena during cycling Machine learning and data-driven modeling for battery state-of-health, state-of-charge, and failure prediction Materials development and electrochemical testing of next-generation battery electrodes and electrolytes Sensor materials development, sensing signal processing, feature extraction, and model validation Postdoc Responsibilities Lead independent and collaborative research projects Prepare manuscripts for publication in high-impact journals Present results at national and international conferences Contribute to grant writing and mentor graduate and undergraduate students PhD Student Responsibilities Conduct original research under faculty supervision toward a doctoral degree Develop expertise across battery materials, sensing, and AI/ML modeling Collaborate within the group and with external partners Publish and present research findings
