Carotid Artery Digital Twin: From Personalized Imaging to Hemodynamics-Driven Intelligent Diagnosis Project detail: Carotid atherosclerosis is a major cause of ischemic stroke. Current clinical assessments based on stenosis severity and plaque morphology are insufficient for accurately predicting plaque rupture and stroke risk. This project aims to develop a carotid artery digital twin framework, integrating high-resolution medical imaging (MRI/CTA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and machine learning to enable personalized risk assessment and treatment planning. Key objectives include: • Reconstruction of patient-specific carotid geometry and hemodynamic parameters (e.g., wall shear stress, oscillatory shear index) • Prediction of plaque progression and rupture risk • Virtual stenting and surgical planning for treatment optimization

Dr. Bijie Yang
Supervisor Introduction: Dr. Bijie Yang received his PhD degree from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Imperial College London sponsored by Mitsubishi Heavy Industry (MHI) Scholarship. Prior to his appointment as a Lecturer in Sustainable Power and Propulsion at Loughborough University, he had been a Research Associate at Imperial College working on a number of Projects sponsored by Industrial Partners, such as, MHI, Caterpillar and Daimler. His research interests include high-fidelity simulations, and multiphysics gas dynamics. Dr. Bijie Yang is also an honorary Lecturer at Imperial College London (ICL).
