About the Programme
The NBS Accounting PhD programme provides rigorous training for PhD students to investigate issues related to auditing, financial accounting, and managerial accounting. Students have a choice between two tracks: the Capital Market Track or the Behavioural Track.
Capital Market Track:
This track utilizes archival data to explore various accounting-related research questions regarding corporate behaviours, including financial reporting, investment, corporate finance, corporate governance, and valuation.
Behavioural Track:
This track focuses on judgment and decision-making processes in accounting settings. It involves the intersection of theories in psychology, economics, and finance, and typically involves (but is not restricted to) the use of experiments.
Programme Summary
The NBS PhD programme is a full-time programme that is typically completed in 4 to 5 years.
Year 1 - coursework, university training requirements
Year 2 - coursework, university training requirements, pre-qualifying exam, qualifying exam
Year 3 - thesis writing, brown bag seminar presentation
Year 4 - thesis writing, internal defence, thesis submission, and examination
Year 4 or 5 - thesis amendments, thesis oral examination
Students will work closely with their supervisors to define their research questions and develop their thesis. Admission & Scholarship
Recruitment for the Academic Year 2027 is open from October 2026 to January 2027.
Various scholarships that cover tuition fees and a living allowance are available to all eligible applicants. Candidates from both business and non-business backgrounds are welcome to apply.

Requirements
Bachelor’s degree certificates & transcripts, and Master’s degree (if any) certificates and transcripts – all academic documents not in English must be accompanied by official English translations.
Two academic referee's reports
GMAT or GRE (taken within the last 5 years) – mandatory for all applicants
IELTS or TOEFL (taken within the last 2 years) – may be waived for applicants who have completed their Bachelor’s degree in English
A research proposal
A statement of objective (1-2 pages)
Research publications and award certificates (if any)
