About the Project The Challenge Manufacturing companies are beginning to use liquid CO2 in machining for cryogenic cooling of the cutting tools. It’s cleaner, greener, and better for the people working on the machines. But there’s a problem. To achieve the best performance, the CO2 has to be delivered from holes in the cutting tools that can be as small as 0.2 mm diameter (about the width of two human hairs). Manufacture of holes at such a small scale reliably is a significant challenge. In this project, working together with Kennametal, a global cutting tool supplier, you will research the delivery of CO2 during cutting. By designing innovative delivery solutions and optimizing CO2 operating conditions to avoid ice crystal formation, you will achieve optimal cooling and machining performance of novel materials such as fibre CFRP and metallic stacks. What you’ll do You’ll not just be sitting at your desk all day using a computer, this EngD is a unique mix of hands-on lab work, experiments and computer modelling. You’ll: Use computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to model how CO2 flows through microscale holes. Run machining trials to see what works in practice and validate and improve your computational models. Look at new materials like carbon fibre composites and metal stacks Work with Kennametal - a global cutting tool company - on real industrial problems Test your ideas on proper machine tools in world-class labs Some of the questions you’ll help answer How small can we make the CO2 delivery holes before it stops working? How does hole shape and position affect cooling and cutting performance? Can we stop ice crystals forming inside the tool? How does CO2 flow affect chip formation and removal? 申请要求
A first-class or strong 2:1 degree in a relevant science or engineering subject such as Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Computer Science or Applied Mathematics. We are particularly keen that applicants have some experience of both CFD and practical machining, and are interested in exploring all aspects of the project. If English isn’t your first language, you’ll need an overall IELTS score of 6.5 with at least 6.0 in each section
