PhD直招介绍
About the Project The University of Bath is inviting applications for the following PhD project commencing on 30 September 2024 under the supervision of Prof Ventsislav Valev( https://researchportal.bath.ac.uk/en/persons/ventsislav-valev ) and Dr Kristina Rusimova( https://www.findaphd.com/common/clickCount.aspx?theid=171640&type=184&DID=82&url=https%3a%2f%2fresearchportal.bath.ac.uk%2fen%2fpersons%2fkristina-rusimova ) in the Department of Physics( https://www.findaphd.com/common/clickCount.aspx?theid=171640&type=184&DID=82&url=https%3a%2f%2fwww.bath.ac.uk%2fdepartments%2fdepartment-of-physics%2f ). Overview of the Research: Emerging quantum technologies are shaping up the 21st century. Quantum computer elements are being constructed, using the energy states of single atoms. Such single atoms are also being assembled into condensates, entangling their wave-functions and creating some of the largest human-made quantum objects. Quantum interferometers, magnetometers and gravitometers are among the tools of the future, that will enable unprecedented sensitivities of gravitational waves, magnetic brain fields and ultra-high precision positioning for navigation and mapping. Atoms in the first column of the periodic table (the alkali metals) are of particular interest, because they all have a lone electron in their outer shell. In a vacuum, such atoms behave essentially as single-electron systems, with very clearly defined energy states. There, electrons can be manipulated across hyper-fine levels, using the quanta of light. Photons were the first quantum objects to be identified. Besides their energy quantum number, photons can also carry spin and orbital angular momentum. By manipulating laser beams, we can therefore dial the quantum states in alkali atoms. Laser beams are manipulated by optical components (such as polarizers, waveplates and vortex plates), but they can also be manipulated at the nanoscale using metal nanostructures, which is what this project is about. In this project, you will explore the interface between quantum optics and nanotechnology. You will learn how to build setups for electromagnetically-induced transparency and you will perform quantum experiments with light. You will illuminate glass containers (such as cuvettes and optical fibres) filled with Rb atoms and coated with nanoparticles, which will be provided or that you could design. You will discover ways to regulate the number of atoms that participate in quantum interactions, essentially regulating quantum-optical effects that underpin a whole range of quantum technologies, such as quantum computing, gravitometry, atomic clocks, atomic traps, magnetometry, etc. The successful candidate for this PhD position would have a strong interest in optics/photonics and a preference for experimental work. They will be encouraged to attend national/international scientific conferences and training schools. We deliver outreach to schools, therefore an interest in communicating science to the public would be an advantage. Project keywords: quantum, photonics, nanoscience, nanotechnology, optics, laser Equality, Diversity and Inclusion: We value a diverse research environment and aim to be an inclusive university, where difference is celebrated and respected. We welcome and encourage applications from under-represented groups. If you have circumstances that you feel we should be aware of that have affected your educational attainment, then please feel free to tell us about it in your application form. The best way to do this is a short paragraph at the end of your personal statement.

项目资助情况
This project will be funded by the EPSRC Quantum Technologies Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) – for more information about eligibility for funding, please see the Funding Notes section below. Funding Notes Candidates may be considered for a 3.5-year EPSRC Quantum Technologies DTP studentship. Funding covers tuition fees, a stipend (£19,237 per annum, 2024/25 rate) and research/training expenses (£1,000 per annum). The studentship is open to both Home and International students; however, in line with guidance from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the number of awards available to International candidates will be limited to 30% of the total number of studentships available across the EPSRC Quantum Technologies DTP. Note that funding does NOT cover the cost of moving to the UK, obtaining a student visa or payment of the UK healthcare surcharge.
