Description
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey , usually referred to as Rutgers University or just Rutgers, is the largest institution for higher education in New Jersey, United States. It was originally chartered as Queen's College in 1766. It is the eighth-oldest college in the United States and one of the nine Colonial colleges founded before the American Revolution. Rutgers was originally a private university affiliated with the Dutch Reformed Church and admitted only male students, but evolved into a coeducational public research university. Rutgers is one of only two colonial colleges that later became public universities, the other being The College of William and Mary. Rutgers was designated The State University of New Jersey by acts of the New Jersey Legislature in 1945 and 1956. The three campuses of Rutgers are in (1) New Brunswick and Piscataway, (2) Newark and (3) Camden. The Newark campus was formerly the University of Newark, which merged into the Rutgers system in 1946, and the Camden campus was created in 1950 from the College of South Jersey and the South Jersey Law School. Rutgers is the largest state university within New Jersey. The university offers more than 100 distinct bachelor, 100 master, and 80 doctoral and professional degree programs across 175 academic departments, 29 degree-granting schools and colleges, 16 of which offer graduate programs of study.

地理位置
New Brunswick is very much a college town; indeed the campus is not really separate from the city so there is much interaction between residents and students. The main drag is College Avenue at the heart of the New Brunswick campus, where the student center happens to be located. A mere three blocks from College Avenue one can find a wealth of fine dining opportunities, everything from soul food to Mongolian food. A popular spot in the neighborhood is Stuff Yer Face, a restaurant/bar with an outdoor section during the warmer months. Right next to that is I’s Café, where you can get bubble tea. For fun, there is The Stress Factory, a comedy club where Chris Rock and Jim Bruer have performed recently. Students can enjoy live music in the park, the Zimmerli Art Museum, and the Theatre District in downtown New Brunswick, all either for free or at low cost for Rutgers students. The Menlo Park and Woodbridge malls are located 15 minutes away. For entrepreneurs looking to make connections, The Middlesex County Courthouse and business district are also within walking distance of campus, too.

Rutgers University has three campuses, Newark, Camden, and the flagship campus Rutgers—New Brunswick, located mostly in New Brunswick and Piscataway. (Even this one campus is so huge that it occupies space in multiple towns.) Rutgers—New Brunswick, which itself encompasses five littler campuses, each with its own student center, dining facilities, stores, and libraries. There’s the College Avenue Campus, with easy access to the Zimmerli Art Museum, and there’s Cook/Douglass, intertwined campuses that host the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (the Cook part) and the Women’s Residential College (the Douglass part). There’s also Busch Campus in Piscataway, which houses natural sciences, Rutgers Stadium, and the best gym on campus. Finally, there’s Livingston Campus, which is also mostly in Piscataway, and focuses on business, psychology and other social sciences, and houses the basketball arena, the Louis Brown Athletic Center (called “the RAC” by students). The general tenor of the campus is that of a grassy, traditional college campus, but with a lot of interconnection with the surrounding urban area. So for instance the College Avenue campus is essentially New Brunswick—there isn’t much of a bubble closing off Rutgers from the outside world. Students always have access to something like a Wendy’s or Dunkin' Donuts on campus, and most of the gyms are state-of-the-art.

宿舍条件
There are more than 30 residence halls on the New Brunswick campus alone. The number fits with the student demand more or less—sometimes the dorms get too crowded but if a student wants to live on-campus, Rutgers can usually make that happen. Dorms can be suites of six students, apartments for two, three, four, and there are even a few singles. Students will usually have access to laundry, a lounge, table tennis and pool, vending machines, and cooking facilities in their building. Some have cable television or special study areas. Students of legal age can drink in their rooms. Greek life is pretty popular at Rutgers, too, and several fraternities and sororities have housing for their members near campus.

体育培养
Sports-wise, Rutgers is best known as “The Birthplace of College Football.” The first football game between two colleges was played at Rutgers in 1869, when the Rutgers team defeated Princeton. The very first organized sport to be played at Rutgers at all, though, was men’s crew—in 1864, students rowed six mile races in six-oared boats on the Raritan River. Today at Rutgers, football is king. Led by highly-paid coach Greg Schiano and star running back Ray Rice, the Rutgers team, the Scarlet Knights (Division I-A, Big East Conference), are doing very well for themselves, winning back-to-back bowl games. The second most emphasized sport is basketball: The men aren’t doing so hot—they went 11-20 last season, and only 3-15 in the Big East. The ladies, on the other hand, led by the also-highly-paid coach C. Vivian Stringer, are famously accomplished, ranked second in the nation as of this writing. (This is the team that was the target of Don Imus’ infamous comment.) The success of football and women’s basketball comes at a price, though—money for these programs came out of the budgets of other athletic programs: Last year, Rutgers eliminated fencing, men’s tennis, swimming, diving, and men’s crew.
