Description
Deakin University is an Australian public university with approximately 47,000 higher education students in 2014. Established in 1974, the University was named after the leader of the Australian federation movement and the nation's second Prime Minister, Alfred Deakin. It has campuses in Geelong, Warrnambool and Burwood, Melbourne in the state of Victoria. Current Vice-Chancellor (CEO) is Jane den Hollander. Deakin University receives more than A600 million in operating revenue annually, and controls more than A1.3 billion in assets. It received more than A35 million in research income in 2011 and had 1,493 research students in 2012. In 2009, its academics authored 33 books, 233 refereed conference papers, and 705 refereed journal papers.

Melbourne Burwood Campus - Melbourne Burwood Campus is Deakin's thriving metropolitan campus, attracting about 17,000 undergraduate and postgraduate on-campus students. It boasts open and inviting spaces for socialising and studying, innovative architecture, spacious new buildings and wireless hotspots. It is accessible by bus, train, tram and bicycle. There is some parking available on campus, for which permits may be required. The university provides a free online carpooling matching service. Geelong Waterfront Campus - Geelong Waterfront Campus is located on Corio Bay, in the central business district of Geelong. Originally built as woolstores in 1893, the buildings have been extensively renovated to create a modern and impressive campus centre. Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus - Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus is located on the western edge of Geelong. The campus features expansive landscaped grounds and extensive sporting facilities. The campus is home to the Geelong Technology Precinct, which provides research and development capabilities and opportunities for university-industry partnerships and new enterprises in the region. Warrnambool Campus - Deakin's Warrnambool Campus is set on the banks of the picturesque Hopkins River, close to local surf beaches and popular tourist attractions. The Warrnambool Campus is a friendly, close-knit community, with a personal and informal relationship between students and staff.

On-campus residences Accommodation is available in student residential villages at the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus, the Warrnambool Campus and the Melbourne Burwood campus. Each resident is housed in single room accommodation and has phone and computer access. Bedrooms are furnished, heated and carpeted. There are shared bathrooms, kitchens, laundries and recreational areas. The residences have a common room with meeting rooms, kitchen, television area and a large open space for social events. In 2012, Deakin University opened a new 400-bed student residence at the Melbourne Burwood Campus, which offers studio and shared apartments. Construction will begin in 2014 for two new student accommodations, one in Geelong that will include 311 beds and another in Warrnambool that will house 100 beds, offering low cost affordable on-campus housing. On-campus accommodation costs between £4,925 and £6,830 annually (AU $8,211 to $11 384). Private off-campus accommodation Many students choose to rent flats, apartments or houses with other students, on their own or with a family. Student Life’s Off-Campus Housing Service (OCHS) can assist with helping you find off-campus accommodation. The OCHS can also assist students to find temporary accommodation until a permanent place is found. Sport and recreational activities across the four Deakin campuses include basketball, netball, badminton, indoor soccer, volleyball, squash, weight and cardio training, billiards and table tennis. Deakin Fitness Clubs are fitness centres located on the Melbourne, Geelong and Warrnambool Campuses. The facilities vary at each campus with a number of the campuses having the latest cardio, weights and free motion equipment.
